November 8, 2009
1:30 p.m.
Tours Sign, Great Hall

An overview of the Metropolitan's exceptional collection of Greek, Hellenistic, Etruscan and Roman art presented in the newly designed galleries.

An introduction to five thousand years of art from the early Cycladic Period in the Fifth Millennium B.C. to the time of Constantine in the Fourth Century A.D. Geographically the objects come from every major part of the Greek and Roman world and represent every major artistic medium. The new Roman Galleries include the reinstallation of the cubiculum from the Villa at Boscoreale and the black bedroom from Boscotrecese. Together with the Roman Wall Paintings they represent a collection unrivaled outside of Italy. The Mezzanine contains the Etruscan Collection with the reassembled Etruscan Chariot as well as a new study area with objects from the entire cultural and chronological span of the department's exceptional collection. The opening of the new Hellenistic, Etruscan and Roman Galleries with its dramatic two story skylit Leon Levy Shelby White Courtyard completes the reconstruction and reinstallation of the Classical Collection.
